What's in a name? Why we have a new look ahead of our summer season
17th Jun 2026
If you've visited us recently or checked out our website, you may have noticed a brand-new look and one very small – but significant – change to our name. Oxford Castle & Prison is now Oxford Castle Prison.
At first glance, it might seem like a minor update. After all, we've simply removed an ampersand. But for us, that small change reflects something much bigger about how we tell the story of this remarkable historic site.
For more than 1,000 years, the castle and prison have been intertwined. From its origins as a Norman stronghold to its later role as a prison, the site has witnessed centuries of change, conflict, justice and reform. That history remains at the heart of everything we do.
However, as we've listened to guests and reflected on what makes a visit here so memorable, we've recognised that it is often the prison stories that leave the strongest impression. The stories of prisoners, governors, reformers and ordinary people whose lives were shaped by the justice system offer a fascinating window into Britain's social history.
Our new name better reflects the experience visitors have when they walk through our gates. While the castle remains an essential part of the story, Oxford Castle Prison places greater emphasis on the people and events that bring the site to life.
The rebrand is also accompanied by a refreshed visual identity that helps us present these stories more clearly and consistently across our attraction, website and marketing materials.
What hasn't changed is our commitment to sharing the history of this extraordinary place. Whether you're climbing St George's Tower, exploring the crypt, stepping inside the prison cells or joining one of our Guided Tours, you'll still discover the same captivating stories that have fascinated visitors for years. And with a packed programme of events this summer, including Knight School and the Oxford Shakespeare Festival, there's never been a better time to experience Oxford Castle Prison for yourself.
We may have lost an ampersand, but we’re telling our stories better than ever.
